MAP-Workshop - German Sign Language

On June 4, 2021 the first internal MAP-workshop of the year took place. During a digital workshop, the MAP students had the opportunity to look beyond the boundaries of their business studies and dive into the world of the German Sign Language. The students gained an insight into the deaf culture and learned first basic words. The finger alphabet was also discussed. After getting first impressions, the MAP students were able to directly apply what they had learned and practised together. Through the interactive sessions during the workshop, everyone was able to quickly apply the learned phrases and communicate with each other. An interesting afternoon with many insights into communication with deaf people for the MAP participants!

 Recap 2020

Once again, MAP is looking back on an exciting, especially turbulent year 2020.

The year 2020 started with a communication workshop. Peter Toenne, specialists and executives coach, gave interesting insights into the adequate management of conflict conversations. Due to the Corona crisis, the first offline event could take place in September, taking into account the hygiene concept: Rob Britton, former executive in, spoke about leadership in the airline industry. In the subsequent digital workshop with thyssenkrupp Management Consulting, MAP participants gained exciting insights into the day-to-day consulting work at TKMC. The next digital event followed in November with our new partner Kearney IMP3ROVE. The students had the opportunity to get to know the work at Kearney IMP3ROVE, but also to have interesting discussions about innovation management of the future. This digital year was then completed by two internal events: At the beginning of December, the students got multifaceted information about scholarships in Germany. Two former scholarship holders reported about their experiences with various organizations. The last event, the annual Christmas party, was again a zoom event. Thereby, old and new MAP participants had the chance to get to know each other.

After a successful year 2020, MAP would like to thank all its company partners and the students for their participation.

MAP Christmas Party 2020

Even in this turbulent year, the traditional MAP Christmas party was not missed. On December 14, 2020 the MAP participants celebrated the traditional Christmas party once again. For the fourth time, all old as well as new MAP members came together in order to look back to an exciting and special year 2020. This year the event took place, different than usual, in a digital format. Just like in previous years, the Christmas evening started with a short welcome by the MAP-Team and a short review of the events in 2020.  In Breakout Sessions, all participants then had the chance to get to know each other. The following Christmas contest was the main part of the evening. Divided into small groups, the participants had to solve digital exercises about Christmas, MAP and Münster at different stations. Here, among other things, the creative vein of the MAPers was put to the test in writing a Christmas poem. In the end, the winning team was chosen and rewarded with a Christmas prize. Despite the digital format of this year’s Christmas event, all MAP members were able to make new friends and leave the evening with Christmas spirit for the upcoming holidays.

Map wishes everyone a Merry Christmas, all the best and especially good health for the upcoming year 2021!

Communication workshop with Peter Toenne

On January 23, 2020 the first MAP-event of the new year took place. Led by the specialists and executives coach Peter Toenne the students went through an interactive workshop with the topic of conflict conversations. To start into the topic, Mr. Toenne introduced the stages of conflict escalation and the derived strategies according to Glasl. After that, the participants split into two groups that received the same situation but with different roles – employee and manager. Both groups independently prepared the conflict discussion and chose one volunteer to simulate the talk in plenary. During the simulation the rest of the participants took up the role of the observers and afterwards gave feedback about the progress of the conversation and the goals of both parties. By discussing their observations after the conversation the students got an idea how to seek for a conflict conversation and how to find solutions for both parties.

We want to thank Mr. Toenne for the educational and inspiring workshop!

Recap 2019

Once again, MAP is looking back on a year full of exciting events.

The year 2019 was kicked-off with a design-thinking workshop led by Sebastian Kortmann, professor at the University of Amsterdam. The students learned about creatice working techniques and went through the design-thinking process theirselves. The year continued with the first practice-partner event for that year. The MAP students visited Arvato – Bertelsmann where they solved a case about logistics optimization in the fashion industry. The next MAP-exclusive event offered the students the opportunity to gain deeper insights in a doctoral student‘s everyday life and could ask all questions regarding the promotion. The day was closed up with the MAP running dinner. In June, the MAP participants visited McKinsey & Company in Düsseldorf and gained insights in a consultant‘s way of working and afterwards worked on a case theirselves. The same month, MAP celebrated its summer party, where we had a barbecue and the greatest weather conditions. The last practice-partner event for the summer semester took place in the office of SchachtOne in Essen. Within the event, all companies of the Haniel AG introduced theirselves. Fresh out of summer break, the winter semester started with the Ernsting’s Famil- event in their headquarter in Coesfeld/Lette. The end of the MAP year 2019 was – as always – the annual MAP Christmas party.

Again, we want to thank all practice-partners for the good cooperation and are looking forward to an upcoming and exciting MAP year 2020!

MAP-Christmas Party

The third MAP Christmas party took place on 02.12.2019.

A Christmas buffet, mulled wine and homemade biscuits marked the beginning of the Christmas season. After an official welcome by the MAP board, the new MAP participants were welcomed. After a little game of getting to know each other, new and old MAP participants were able to talk about past MAP events and experiences during their studies. An annual surprise was the visit of Santa Claus, who had a present for all MAPers together with his splendidly decorated Christmas tree. After the end of the Christmas party, the evening was ended in the old town.

MAP wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

MAP visiting Ernsting’s Family

On November 8, 2019 the MAP participants visited Ernsting’s Family in their office in Coesfeld/Lette for the second time.

After the arrival, we had a short breakfast with coffee and bagels before we started the day with an introduction to the family-owned enterprise. After that, we dived deeper into the topic of Sustainability in the textile industry with the help of a case. In small groups, the students identified risks in the areas raw materials, processing and cut-make-trim with the help of provided articles and videos. As second step, each group developed suitable countermeasures for Ernsting’s Family to face those risks. Finally, the results of all groups were presented to the others and closed up in a discussion.

After a lunch break in the company’s in-house cafeteria, the MAP participants joined a tour on the company’s property. The tour guide explained the building’s architecture as well as the high-bay warehouse. Back in the office, we continued with the Ernsting’s Family market place. At several booths, trainees told about their career path in the firm and explained the tasks and responsibilities of their departments. Hereby, the students were able to ask all questions in small groups and engaged in a personal exchange with the trainees. After a feedback round, the MAP participants started their way back to Münster.

We want to thank Ernsting’s Family for this well-organized day!

MAP visiting SchachtOne

On June 5, 2019 the MAP participants were invited to the headquarter of SchachtOne in Essen. The office is located on the area of Zeche Zollverein – UNESCO world cultural heritage in memory of the German coal mining industry.

SchachtOne is the digital unit of the mother company Franz Haniel & Cie. which is an investmentholding with family-equity and a long tradition. Further portfolio companies of the holding, which were also present on that day, are CWS-boco (fullservice for restroom hygiene, dirt trapping mats, work wear and textile solutions), TAKKT-AG (office equipment for companies of any branch and size) as well as the spin-off company Schmiede Zollverein (digital consulting for external companies).

Kicking-off the day, the several companies introduced themselves and gave interesting insights in their way of working. After a quick lunch, the MAP participants were guided through the area of Zeche Zollverein and provided with explanations about the history of the coal mining industry.

Back in the office, the five firms‘ representatives spread into different rooms. The students got the opportunity to talk to two companies of their choice for each 30 minutes. The focus of these conversations were possible career opportunities after the studies as well as internships and working student contracts. If there has aroused a deeper interest for specific jobs, there was time to network even more with the representatives in „1-on-1“ meetings afterwards. Hence, the entire event stood under the light of „extending your network“.

The day enabled the programs‘ participants to gain new insights into the present companies and build business contacts for the future.

Again, we want to thank SchachtOne and the rest of the companies very much for this successful day and their hospitality!

MAP-Summer Party

On June 28, 2019 MAP celebrated its summer party with perfect weather at the Münster river. The newly renovated area with sand next to the river was the perfect place for a nice evening.

We had a barbecue with sausages and each MAP participant contributed with some salad and sides to the buffet. To stay hydrated despite the high temperature of over 30 degrees, there were several cooled beverages for everyone.

This evening, new as well as old MAP participants who returned from their semester abroad or internships came together. Hence, the event was the perfect opportunity to exchange experiences from the last months.

After the dusk, the party was relocated to the old town to end the evening.

MAP visiting McKinsey & Company

On June 18, 2019 the MAP participants visited the consulting firm McKinsey & Company in Düsseldorf. Their office in the 20th floor of the SkyOffice offered an amazing view over the city.

After a quick lunch and a first get-together the official part of the event began. Four McKinsey consultants introduced the company and its way of working which the students were able to test on their own on a case in the following. With the help of an introduction about problem structuring and processing as well as communication the students were welcomed to apply this on the case. Therefore, they created for example an issue sheet and a solution tree. After each group session the results were presented and discussed.

To end the event the consultants talked about their everyday life and answered all remaining questions of the participants.

Again, we want to thank McKinsey very much for this successful day!

Doctoral Study-Talk and MAP-Running Dinner

On May 9, 2019 our next MAP-exclusive event took place. First, all MAP students were invited to inform their selves about the doctoral program with snacks and coffee at the Business Management Group office. After a brief general introduction of the doctoral students’ research fields, the students split into small groups. All questions regarding the requirements, content and tasks of a promotion as well as about the daily life of a doctoral student could be asked in this relaxed atmosphere.

In the evening, we started the first MAP-running dinner. 12 cooking teams with two persons each prepared either starter, main course or dessert and welcomed two other teams for eating. The event was not only a good opportunity to get inspired by new meals but also to tighten friendships and exchange experiences. Especially, for our six latest entrants who joined the MAP program in April 2019, the running dinner was a great occasion to get to know the group. Finally, all cooking teams met in the city center to fade the evening.

MAP at Arvato – Bertelsmann

The first practice partner event in the new MAP year took place on April 15, 2019 at Arvato – member of the Bertelsmann Group.

After a short introduction of the company, the students were allocated to groups, in order to work on a case with the topic „Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in Logistics“. After a quick lunchbreak and another workshop round, the single groups presented their outcome. Possible solutions were e.g. the reduction of returned sales or inventory.

Following a small victory ceremony, the students were able to get to know better the representatives of the company within a get-together.

To end the day, there was a nice sit-in at Café Sieben at the harbour.

Again, we want to thank Arvato very much for this event!

Start into the New Year - A Workshop with Sebastian Kortmann

On 22 January 2019, it was time for the first MAP event of the year: a workshop with Sebastian Kortmann, Professor of Strategy and Innovation and Director of the MBA Program at the Amsterdam Business School.

The workshop titled "How to build a company in today's dynamic environment: corporates vs. startups" gave participants interesting insights into the thinking of customer-centric innovation, business model development and prototyping. In an interactive part of the afternoon, the group split up into teams and the students were able to apply Design Thinking methods on their own. The day ended with a visit to Mocca d'or, a restaurant in downtown Münster. There, the students had time to talk, to both each other and Sebastian Kortman whom they got know better in the more relaxed.

MAP - Recap 2018

After one year, MAP looks back on an exciting and interesting 2018. At the beginning of the year, Amazon visited MAP and its participants in Münster. The students gained insights into the "Leadership Principles" and the dynamic way in which Amazon works. During a MAP exclusive Brainteaser event and a visit to cheese dairy “Hafenkäserei” in Münster, the students were able to get to know each other better and exchange ideas. In the summer, MAP students visited the McKinsey & Company Office in Düsseldorf and were able to get a sneak peek at the work consultants do while working together on a case study. A scavenger hunt through the city centre of Münster followed by a barbecue prepared the students for summer break. In a new application phase in October, MAP admitted 17 new students into the MAP program. In another company visit at Ernsting’s Family, new and old MAP members were able to getting to know each other as well as gaining insights into the topic of CSR and the Ernsting’s Family Group. The annual Christmas party marked the end of the year.

After a successful year 2018, MAP would like to thank all its company partners and the students for their participation.

MAP's Christmas Party

For the end of the year, the MAP members met on November 26 on the premises of the KSHG for MAP's Christmas Party. Just like the previous year, the evening started with a warm welcome by the organisation team.

Since the Christmas party was the first MAP exclusive event for new and old members to meet in a less formal, relaxed and comfortable way, they took the opportunity to get to know each other. With Christmas music in the background and mulled wine in their hands, there was enough time to chit and chat. As many of the MAP members also brought homemade delicacies to the party, the members' physical well-being was well taken care of.

Almost a tradition now, there was no way that Santa Claus would miss the celebration this year. He read out of his book, and praised and condemned the MAP members' behavior from last year - with a wink in his eye, of course. Eventually though, a MAP member's self-written poem led to what everybody was waiting for: Santa handed out his presents to MAP!

After many new friendships were made and the last cups of mulled wine were emptied, the group changed location into Münster's old town to spend the rest of the evening there.

MAP wishes all members a Merry Christmas and holidays and a Happy New Year in which many new and exciting events await.

MAP visits Ernsting's Family in Coesfeld-Lette

On October 31, 2018 the students and organizers of the MAP program visited Ernsting's Family in Coesfeld-Lette. The one-day event offered MAP students numerous opportunities to learn about the company, its culture and its employees.

The journey started early in the morning from Münster main station. On the train ride to Coesfeld Lette, the new MAP members were able to get to mingle with the old members and get to know each other better as well.  After a few introductory words by Stephan Harms, both external doctoral student at the Business Management Group and Senior Manager Procurement and Sustainability Resort at Ernsting's Family, Stephanie Gerdes introduced the company, herself Team Leader Training and Further Education. An exciting and informative lecture on sustainability in the textile industry at Ernsting’s Family followed.

After a culinary refreshment, the second half of the day began with a tour of the plant. It led the group from the impressive and ultra-modern main building over to the entire site of the logistics centre and its fully automated high-bay warehouse. Afterwards, current and former trainees talked to the students about everyday work in the areas of controlling, procurement, IT and strategic sales. In between lectures, there was enough time to answer all the questions the students had.

After a final Q&A session, MAP started its journey back to Münster with a lot of new information and insight. With this in mind, MAP would like to thank Ernsting's Family for the exciting and well-rounded day. We are looking forward to the event next year!

MAP-exclusive Event in Muenster

Following the latest practice partner event in June, MAP organized a MAP-member-exclusive scavenger hunt for July!

On July 10, 2018, four groups started in the early afternoon to solve various tasks and riddles at different stations. For the new MAP members of the summer semester, this MAP-exclusive event was a wonderful opportunity to connect with their fellow students in a more personal environment.

The scavenger hunt took the students to the various sights of Muenster and its university buildings. As it is typical for Muenster, all riddle stations were, of course, visited by bike!

For the day’s finale and thereby the scavenger hunt’s ending, the teams gathered together at the same final destination. There, the winners were selected, and the first semi-final of the FIFA World Championship watched while everybody also appreciated the barbecue. It was apparent that the participants enjoyed the event immensely and that they will remember this team spirit-facilitating event for a long time.

MAP in Düsseldorf as Guests of McKinsey & Company

On Tuesday, June 19, 2018, the next practice partner event for the members of student talent program MAP took place: An exciting afternoon with McKinsey & Company - one of the world's leading management consulting firms. The students participated in a workshop on problem structuring and problem solving in the office in Düsseldorf. The MAP members were warmly welcomed and enjoyed an impressive view on Düsseldorf and the Rhine.

In an introduction round, the students were able to get to know the consultants and their fields of work more closely.

The workshop day then continued with a short introduction into the workshop’s content. The students received insights into the consultants’ working methods, and afterwards worked on a case study with the newly acquired knowledge under helpful tutoring and guidance. The focus of the workshop lay on problem structuring, problem processing, and precise communication. In a number of presentation and feedback sessions, the students were able to gain many helpful tips for the future.

After a short presentation about job entry opportunities for students and prospective graduates, a final Q&A session followed, in which all remaining questions were answered in-depth.

MAP would like to thank McKinsey for the exciting afternoon, great guidance throughout the day, and an interesting glimpse into McKinsey's world. We look forward to a continuing successful partnership.

MAP’s Start into the Summer Semester

Not only the sun was awating the students of student talent program MAP at the beginning of the summer semester in Muenster, but also the second MAP-exclusive event stood ahead: Crack(er)s & Cheese!

As the first part of the event’s name already suggests, MAP members met in the Heribert Meffert library on April 26th and solved brain teasers as well as working on case studies together in groups. To meet the expectations of the event name’s second part, the students of MAP visited the Hafenkäserei Münster afterwards. While having a beautiful view on Muenster’s port, the students got to know more about the cheese dairy’s history and learned more about cheese production and its preparation.

Following a delicious cheese tasting, the event came to a pleasantly homey end in the Café Med restaurant.

The Second Event - Amazon in Muenster

The new year started off with an event by Amazon for the MAP members. For the workhop on February 1st, three employees from the office in Munich came to Muenster to get to know the MAP members and to introduce Amazon in an exciting presentation.

The students acquired first-hand insights into Amazon's culture and working environment. Interesting topics such as Amazon's leadership principles and the dynamic way of working were introduced on the day.

Afterwards, students had the opportunity to discuss the current business area challenges Amaon faces, and work on case studies concerning these topics and to develop creative solutions. The company representatives actively supported the students during their work by answering questions and giving constant assistance. After a short presentation session and subsequent feedbacks, the students were able to ask questions and to connect during a relaxed get-together.

Thank you, Amazon, for a great day and we are looking forward to all the upcoming events with you!

The First Event - MAP as Guests of Schacht One

This "MAP year" began on December 15, 2017, with the first event in Essen, Germany on "Zeche Zollverein" with our practice partner Schacht One. Upon entering Schacht One’s hip and modern office facilities amid UNESCO World Heritage, it became apparent to the students that the workshop will focus on future topics: Schacht One had already prepared an extensive and exiting schedule for the students.

At first, Schacht One introduced themselves as a subsidiary of Franz Haniel & Cie. GmbH based at the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site and stands for innovation, perseverance and authenticity that produces the fuel for the growth of the future: digital ideas!

In close cooperation with the business units of Haniel & Cie, Schacht One realizes tangible digital projects through a particularly future-oriented way of working.

Dr. Sebastian Schäfer introduced and explained some of Schacht Ones’s important working tools, which afterwards the MAP members used in the workshop. Under the guidance of the experts, the students practiced on a real business case for one of Schacht One's actual customers. The students developed creative ideas in a so-called "design studio", decided jointly via “dot-mocracy", and specified their ideas through the "service canvas". In a final round, each group presented its developed concept in a pitch.

MAP would like to thank Schacht One once again for the hospitality, and the insightful and interactive event. We look forward to an ongoing, successful partnership.

MAP's Christmas Holiday Event

On November 29, 2017, the day of the cozy Christmas holiday party had arrived - a party at which the MAP members would get to know each other for the very first time. For this first meet-up, MAP rented the premises of the KSHG, conveniently located near to the university.

A multitude of different treats brought along by everybody sufficed for the catering of the whole evening. Focal point of the event, however, was getting to know each other for the first time as members of MAP from all the different years of studies. Naturally, some icebreaker games had to be played, and MAP members had to find the answers to questions such as “Who crossed the Alps hiking?”, “Which MAP member has already attained an Information Systems Bachelor degree?” and “Who travelled South Korea on their bike?” Games and questions like that helped the MAP community grow stronger together and connected students in their Bachelor studies with students in their Master studies and vice versa.

When finally, the Grinch, Santa Claus and his elf appeared, there was no escaping the holiday feeling.

The poetry lines

“I am sure with MAP, a great time lies ahead

And the next event’s date, is also already set!”

say it all: With their MAP participation, the students know they have an exciting and eventful time ahead.
